AA Thought for the Day

Hope

At first it was a shock to realize I was an alcoholic,
but the realization that there was hope made it easier.
The baffling problem of getting drunk
when I had every intention of staying sober was simplified.
It was a great relief to know I didn't have to drink any more.

AA Thought for the Day

November 20, 2008

Threefold Opportunity

The God I thought had judged and damned me had done nothing of the sort.
He had been listening, and in His own good time His answer came.
His answer was threefold: the opportunity for a life of sobriety;
Twelve Steps to practice, in order to attain and maintain that life of sobriety;
fellowship within the program, ever ready to sustain and help me
each twenty-four hour day. . .
In the use of this opportunity, the onus is on me.

Listening

Sometimes in sobriety I've prayed when I needed to meditate.
I've yammered at God so much that God can't get a word in edgewise.
To me, meditation is simply being quiet and listening for a change.
It is buttoning up my lip -- and my mind that yaps even when my mouth is shut.
Meditation is the path by which I cease being caught up
in my own mental "garbage in/garbage out" recycling.
It is the path by which I walk out of the turmoil, trouble, depression,
and frustration that I create in and around me.

Bedevilments

We were having trouble with personal relationships,
we couldn't control our emotional natures,
we were prey to misery and depression, we couldn't make a living,
we had a feeling of uselessness, we were full of fear,
we were unhappy, we couldn't seem to be of real help to other people --
was not a basic solution of these bedevilments more important . . .?
Of course it was.

Thought to Ponder . . .

The solution is simple. The solution is spiritual.

Acceptance

At one time the admission that I was and am an alcoholic
meant shame, defeat, and failure to me.
But in the light of the new understanding that I have found in AA,
I have been able to interpret that defeat
and that failure and that shame as seeds of victory.
Because it was only through feeling defeat and feeling failure,
the inability to cope with my life and with alcohol,
that I was able to surrender and accept the fact that I had this disease
and that I had to learn to live again without alcohol.

First Things First

This is strictly a matter of survival for us.
We have learned that alcoholism is a killer disease,
leading to death in a large number of ways.
We prefer not to activate that disease by taking a drink. . .
When we view alcoholism as the life-or-death matter it is, the answer is plain.
If we do not save our health -- our lives --
then certainly we will have no family, no job, and no friends.
If we value family, job, and friends, we must first save our own lives
in order to cherish all three.

November 25...............................Gratefully Recovering

"We entertained the thought that staying clean was not paying off, and the old thinking stirred up self-pity, resentment, and anger."

Basic Text, p.98

There are days when some of us wallow in self-pity. It's easy to do. We may have expectations about how our lives should be in recovery, expectations that aren't always met. Maybe we've tried unsuccessfully to control someone, or we think our circumstances should be different. Perhaps we've compared ourselves with other recovering addicts and found ourselves lacking. The more we try to make our life conform to our expectations, the more uncomfortable we feel. Self-pity can arise from living in our expectation instead of in the world as it actually is.

When the world doesn't measure up to our expectations, it's often our expectations that need adjusting, not the world. We can start by comparing our lives today with the way they used to be, developing gratitude for our recovery. We can extend this exercise in gratitude by counting the good things in our lives, becoming thankful that the world does not conform to our expectations but exceeds them. And if we continue working the Twelve Steps, further cultivating gratitude and acceptance, what we can expect in the future is more growth, more happiness, and more peace of mind.

We've been given much in recovery; staying clean has paid off. Acceptance of our lives, just for today, frees us from our self-pity.

Just for today: I will accept my life, gratefully, just as it is.

Recovering Addicts, NA World Services, Inc. page 342

November 25........Breach the Walls of Ego

From "As Bill Sees It", Page 74

People who are driven by pride of self unconsciously blind themselves to their liabilities. Newcomers of this sort scarcely need comforting. The problem is to help them discover a chink in the walls their ego has built, through which the light of reason can shine.

<< << << >> >> >>

The attainment of greater humility is the foundation principle of each of AA's Twelve Steps. For without some degree of humility, no alcoholic can stay sober at all.

Nearly all AA's have found, too, that unless they develop much more of this precious quality than may be required just for sobriety, they still haven't much chance of becoming truly happy. Without it, they cannot live to much useful purpose, or, in adversity, be able to summon the faith that can meet any emergency.

Staying Here

If you want to Get Ahead with any degree of peace,
you must first learn to Stay Here.
It takes guts to Stay Here; it takes self-discipline and resolution.
Anyone with sufficient energy and a one-track mind can Get Ahead;
witness the robber barons, the dictators, the demagogues.
But to Stay Here, you must know where you are
before you can know where you are going.
You must seek before you can find, and you must ask
before you really learn to seek.
It takes humility to ask, patience to wait for the answer,
and faith that the answer will come.

Back on Track

Since AA, it doesn't matter how bad things get --
I always have a feeling that everything is going to be all right.
In working the Twelve Steps, my life and my old way of thinking have changed.
I have no control over some of the things that happen in my life,
but with the help of God I can now choose how I will respond.
Today I choose to be happy, and when I'm not,
I have the tools of the program to put me back on track.

"I'm in the action business, and God is in the results business."

I was at my local Starbucks last week, and I ran into a friend who is in the program. He asked me how I was doing and I told him how overwhelmed and scared I felt, and that's when he reminded me that there are some things I can control, and some things I can't. As soon as he said this, I felt a great relief because I realized at once that I had been trying to control everything again.

Before recovery that's how I lived my life. I planned everything, took massive action, and then I tried to control the results. It was exhausting living that way, but without a Higher Power in my life, I didn't dare let go of anything. What a gift (and relief!) it was to learn that my real role in life is to suit up and show up and then turn the results over to God.

As we kept talking, he told me that all I had to do was take the next indicated action and then turn it over. When I looked at it this way, I was comforted because I knew I could control setting the next appointment or taking the next test, and as I released the results I released the tension and worry as well.

Today, I remind myself that I am in the action business, and God is in the results business.

AA Thought for the Day

November 27, 2008

Thankfulness

How thankful I am today, to know that all my past failures
were necessary for me to be where I am now.
Through much pain came experience and, in suffering, I became obedient.
When I sought God, as I understand Him, He shared His treasured gifts.
Through experience and obedience, growth started,
followed by gratitude.
Yes, then came peace of mind -- living in and sharing sobriety.

November 27, 2008.…………… Gratitude Should Go Forward

From "As Bill Sees It", Page 29

"Gratitude should go forward, rather than backward."

"In other words, if you carry the message to still others, you will be making the best possible repayment for the help given to you."

<< << >> >>

No satisfaction has been deeper an no joy greater than in a Twelfth Step job well done. To watch the eyes of men and women open with wonder as they move from darkness into light, to see their lives quickly fill with new purpose and meaning, and above all to watch them awaken to the presence of a loving God in their lives--theses things are the substance of what we receive as we carry A.A.'s message.

Faith

If you arrive at AA with no religious convictions, you can, if you wish,
make AA itself or even your AA group your "Higher Power."
Here's a large group of people who have solved their alcohol problem.
In this respect they are certainly a power great than you.
Even this minimum of faith will be enough.

November 29, 2008.………..Chapter Two, “What is the Narcotics Anonymous Program?”

Basic Text, page 9

N.A. is a nonprofit Fellowship or society of men and women for whom drugs had become a major problem. We are recovering addicts who meet regularly to help each other stay clean. This is a program of complete abstinence from all drugs. There is only one requirement for membership, the desire to stop using. We suggest that you keep an open mind and give yourself a break. Our program is a set of principles written so simply that we can follow them in our daily lives. The most important thing about them is that they work.

There are no strings attached to N.A. We are not affiliated with any other organizations, we have no initiations fees or dues, no pledges to sign, no promises to make to anyone. We are not connected with any political, religious or law enforcement groups, and are under no surveillance at any time. Anyone may join us, regardless of age, race, sexual identity, creed, religion or lace of religion.

We are not interested in what or how much you used or who your connections were, what you have done in the past, how much or how little you have, but only in what you want to do about your problem and how we can help. The newcomer is the most important person at any meeting, because we can only keep what we have by giving it away. We have learned from our group experience that those who keep coming to our meetings regularly stay clean.
