AA Thought for the Day
August 8, 2009
Seeds of Victory
At one time the admission that I was an am an alcoholic meant shame, defeat, and failure to me. But in the light of the new understanding that I have found in AA, I have been able to interpret that defeat and that failure and that shame as seeds of victory. - Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 295
Thought to Ponder . . .
When I change the way I look at things, the things I look at change.

SORRY BEEN ON VACATION:
AA Thought for the Day

Pride
Pride is the basic breeder of most human difficulties, the chief block to true progress. Pride lures us into making demands upon ourselves or upon others which cannot be met without perverting or misusing our God-given instincts. - As Bill Sees It, p. 12
Thought to Ponder . . .
Swallowing my pride will not get me drunk.

AA Thought for the Day

Surrender
Many of us begin the process of surrender when we identify ourselves at an NA meeting with our name and the words, “I am an addict.” Once we admit that we are addicts and that we cannot stop using on our own, we are able to stay clean on a daily basis with the help of other recovering addicts in Narcotics Anonymous. The paradox of this admission is evident once we work the First Step. As long as we think we can control our drug use, we are almost forced to continue. The minute we admit we’re powerless, we never have to use again. This reprieve from having to use is the most profound gift we can receive, for it saves our lives.
Step One, It Works, How and Why
“I can’t, but we can.”
We need to always remember where we came from and where our addiction took us. We have only a daily reprieve from our active addiction. Each day, we accept the fact that we cannot use drugs successfully.

AA Thought for the Day

Fundamentals
One of the most fundamental things I have learned is to pass on our message to other alcoholics. That means I must think more about others than about myself. The most important thing is to practice these principles in all my affairs. In my opinion, that is what Alcoholics Anonymous is all about. - Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 109
Thought to Ponder . . .
In AA we carry the message -- not the mess.

` Correction! Yesterday's message contained an error.
The quote was from page 199 in the Big Book -- not p. 109 ~

Identity
Every day, I feel a little bit more useful, more happy and more free. Life, including some ups and downs, is a lot of fun. I am a part of AA which is a way of life. If I had not become an active alcoholic and joined AA, I might never have found my own identity or become a part of anything. - Experience, Strength and Hope, p.363

Courage
When fear persisted, we knew it for what it was, and we became able to handle it. We began to see each adversity as a God-given opportunity to develop the kind of courage which is born of humility, rather than of bravado. - As Bill Sees It, p.91
Thought to Ponder . . .

Thought for the Day August 17, 2009 Relapse
Our spiritual and emotional growth in AA does not depend so deeply upon success as it does upon our failures and setbacks. If you will bear this in mind, I think your slip will have the effect of kicking you upstairs, instead of down. - As Bill Sees It, p. 184 Thought to Ponder . . .
Having a slip is not an option. Staying sober is the solution.

Unconditional
Alcoholism is for us unconditional, with no dispensations available at any price. It may take a little while to get that knowledge into the marrow of our bones. And we sometimes do not recognize the conditions we have unconsciously attached to our recovery until something goes wrong through no fault of ours. Then -- whammy! -- there it is. We had not counted on this happening. - Living Sober, pp.63-4

Perseverance
You are betting, or course, that your changed attitude plus the contents of this book will turn the trick. In some cases it will, and in others it may not. But we think that if you persevere, the percentage of successes will gratify you. - Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 144
Thought to Ponder . . .

He somehow knows that God has enabled him to make a mighty beginning, and he senses that he stands at the edge of new mysteries, joys, and experiences of which he had never even dreamed.. - Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, pp. 109-110

AA Thought for the Day
August 21, 2009
Step One
Our addiction finally brings us to a place where we can no longer deny the nature of our problem. All the lies, all the rationalizations, all the illusions fall away as we stand face-to-face with what our lives have become. We realize we’ve been living without hope. We find we’ve become friendless or so completely disconnected that our relationships are a sham, a parody of love and intimacy. Though it may seem that all is lost when we find ourselves in this state, the truth is that we must pass through this place before we can embark upon our journey of recovery.
The NA Step Working Guide, Page 3
Only after surrender are able to overcome the alienation of addiction. Help for addicts begins only when we are able to admit complete defeat.

AA Thought for the Day

Honesty
Having trouble with the First Step? Relax. All the program asks is enough honesty to get started -- just what we are capable of at the moment. At the beginning, that's very little honesty. Each day, there will be a little more. It will come. Because, you see, the AA program works for anyone who wants it. - The Best of the Grapevine [Vol. 2], p. 34
Thought to Ponder . . .
Honesty isn't an event -- it's a process.

Honesty, Open-mindedness, Willingness.

Resources
The things I thought I needed for so many years no longer seem important, now that I have become aware of the spiritual resources God has given me. With these, I don't need alcohol to function. What a joy to stay sober on love instead of fear. - Came To Believe . . ., p. 35
Thought to Ponder . . .
The joy is in the journey, so enjoy the ride.

NA Thought for the Day
August 22, 2009
These are some of the questions we have asked ourselves: Are we sure we want to stop using? Do we understand that we have no real control over drugs? Do we recognize that in the long run, we didn’t use drugs – they used us? Did jails and institutions take over the management of our lives at different times? Do we fully accept the fact that our every attempt to stop using or to control our using failed? Do we know that our addiction changed us into someone we didn’t want to be: dishonest, deceitful, self-willed people at odds with ourselves and our fellow man? Do we really believe that we have failed as drug users?
When we were using, reality became so painful that oblivion was preferable. We tried to keep other people from knowing about our pain. We isolated ourselves, and lived in prisons that we built with loneliness. Through this desperation, we sought help in NA. When we come to NA, we are physically, mentally, and spiritually bankrupt. We have hurt so long that we are willing to go to any length to stay clean.
Our only hope is to live by the example of those who have faced our dilemma and have found a way out. Regardless of who we are, where we came from, or what we have done, we are accepted in NA. Our addiction gives us a common ground for understanding one another.
As a result of attending a few meetings, we begin to feel like we finally belong somewhere. It is in these meetings that we are introduced to the Twelve Steps of Narcotics Anonymous. We learn to work the steps in the order that they are written and to use them on a daily basis. The steps are our solution. They are our survival kit. They are our defense against addiction which is a deadly disease. Our steps are the principles that make our recovery possible.
NA Book, pages 18 and 19
There is one thing more than anything else that will defeat us in our recovery; this is an attitude of indifference or intolerance toward spiritual principles. Three of these that are indispensable are honesty, open-mindedness and willingness. With these we are well on our way.
We feel that our approach to the disease of addiction is completely realistic for the therapeutic value of one addict helping another is without parallel. We feel that our way is practical, for one addict can best understand and help another addict. We believe that the sooner we face our problems within our society, in everyday living, just that much faster do we become acceptable, responsible, and productive members of that society.

AA Thought for the Day August 24, 2009 A Design for Living
What seemed at first a flimsy reed, has proved to be the loving and powerful hand of God. A new life has been given us or, if you prefer,"a design for living" that really works. - Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 28
