AA Thought for the Day

October 22, 2009

Powerlessness

Our admissions of personal powerlessness finally turn out
to be firm bedrock
upon which happy and purposeful lives may be built.
We know that little good can come to any alcoholic who joins AA
unless he has first accepted his devastating weakness and all its consequences.
- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 21

Thought to Ponder . . .

Every recovery from alcoholism began with one sober hour.

Sponsors

On the spur of the moment I said, "Why don't you be my sponsor?"
and on the spur of the moment he said to me,
"I'll be your sponsor if you'll be my sponsor." And I said, "I don't know if they'll allow that."
But we decided to try it and it worked out.
He calls me because I'm his sponsor and I call him because he's my sponsor
so I guess we call each other twice as often.
We're still sponsoring each other. It's been going on for twenty-seven years.
- Dr. Paul O., The Best of the Grapevine [Vol. 3], p.129

Thought to Ponder . . .

Don't look for a sponsor, listen for one.

AA Thought for the Day

October 25, 2009

Defenseless

We are without defense against the first drink.
The almost certain consequences that follow taking even a glass of beer
do not crowd into the mind to deter us. . .
There is a complete failure of the kind of defense
that keeps one from putting his hand on a hot stove.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p.24

Thought to Ponder . . .

The ultimate defense against the first drink is a spiritual one.

Anger

If we were to live, we had to be free of anger.
The grouch and the brainstorm were not for us.
They may be the luxury of normal men, but for alcoholics,
these things are poison.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 66

Thought to Ponder . . .

Anger is the wind that blows out the light of reason.

Thought for the day

"Live life today as though you knew you were dying."

We've all heard sayings like this before, and for many years my reaction was, "Yeah but it's not my last day and the rent is due at the end of the month, and my relationship isn't getting better, and blah, blah, blah." As the many worries of the future consumed me, the precious days and years passed by without me, and now, at 13 years of sobriety, I wonder where the time went.

I remember when I got 30 days an old timer with 24 years shook my hand and congratulated me. I said, "Gee, I wish I had 24 years," and I'll never forget what he said. "I'll trade you my 24 years, right now, for your 30 days!" It took me many years to see the wisdom in this - it's about the journey, not the destination.

These days, I'm very aware of the gift of another day alive and sober. I've seen a lot of people go out or even die, and today I live from a place of supreme gratitude. Life is precious, beautiful and filled with opportunities to help people and make a real difference. I appreciate my life today, and I'm grateful that I'm present enough to enjoy it.

Today I live life as though I was dying, and I'm fully alive because of it.

Forgiveness

Forgiveness of self and forgiveness of others
are just two currents in the same river,
both hindered or shut off completely by the dam of resentment.
Once the dam is lifted, both currents can flow.
- Daily Reflections, p. 146

Thought to Ponder . . .

Forgiveness of others is a gift to yourself.

Turning Point

Half measures availed us nothing. We stood at the turning point.
We asked his protection and care with complete abandon.

How coincidental, my roommate and I were talking and the term recreational drugs came up. And I thought that's not a good thing.
Where as a few years back I would have been all about doing what ever you pleased. So I would have to agree with changing the way I look at things(drugs) changes the things I look at. I now think of riding my bike or singing and dancing as recreational.

Values

I stood off and took a long look at life and the values I found in it:
I saw a paradox, that he who loses his life does indeed find it.
The more you give, the more you get.
The less you think of yourself the more of a person you become.
- Experience, Strength and Hope, p. 431

Thought to Ponder . . .

We surrender to win; we give away to keep;
we suffer to get well; we die to live.

ALL OUR NEEDS

Any my God shall supply every need of yours according to His riches

in glory. . . .

-Phil. 4:19

This verse has helped me many times. It has helped me when I have wondered where my next friends bit of wisdom, insight, or meal was coming from.

Everything I need today shall be supplied to me.

People, jobs, what we have at our immediate disposal, are not our source.

We have tapped into a Greater Source, a source of infinite and immediate supply: God and His Universe.

Our task is to allow ourselves to come into harmony with our Source. Our task is to believe in, and look to, our true Source. Our task is to release fear, negative thinking, limitations, and short-supply thinking.

Everything we need shall be provided to us. Let it become a natural response to all situations, and all situations of need.

Reject fear. Reject short-supply and limited thinking notions. Be open to Abundance.

Cherish need because it is part of our relationship to God and His Universe. God has planned to meet our every need, has created the need within us, so God can supply.

No need is too small or too great. If we care and value our need, God will too.

Our part is taking responsibility for owning the need. Our part is giving the need to the Universe. Our part is letting go, in faith. Our part is giving God permission to meet our needs by believing we deserve to have our needs - and want - met.

Our part is healthy giving, not out of caretaking, guilt, obligation, and codependency, but out of a healthy relationship with ourselves, God, and all of God's creations.

Our part is simply to be who we are, and love being that.

Today, I will practice the belief that all my needs today shall be met. I will step into harmony with God and His Universe, knowing that I count.

Progress

If we ask, God will certainly forgive our derelictions.
But in no case does He render us white as snow . . .
That is something we are supposed to be willing to work toward ourselves.
He asks only that we try as best we know how to make progress
in the building of character.
- As Bill Sees It, p. 204

Thought to Ponder . . .

I need to uncover in order to recover.

Trust

When I put my faith in the spiritual power of the program,
when I trust others to teach me what I have to do to have a better life,
I find that I can trust myself to do what is necessary.
- Daily Reflections, p. 226

Thought to Ponder . . .

Trust God. Clean house. Help others.

Meditation

A clear light seems to fall upon us all -- when we open our eyes.
Since our blindness is caused by our own defects,
we must first realize what they are.
Constructive meditation is the first requirement for each new step
in our spiritual growth.
- As Bill Sees It, p. 10

Thought to Ponder . . .

Meditation is our step out into the sun.

Discovery

AA has accomplished so many things in my life today.
It has given me my sanity and an all-around sense of balance.
Now willing to listen and take suggestions,
I have found that the process of discovering who I really am
begins with knowing who I really don't want to be.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, pp. 456-457

Thought to Ponder . . .

Recovery is discovery.

Acceptance

And acceptance is the answer to all my problems today.
When I am disturbed, it is because I find some person, place, thing,
or situation -- some fact of my life -- unacceptable to me,
and I can find no serenity until I accept that person, place, thing, or situation
as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment.
Nothing, absolutely nothing happens in God's world by mistake.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 417

Thought to Ponder . . .

My serenity is directly proportional to my level of acceptance.

AA-related 'Alconym' . . .

Acknowledge Acceptance.
