AA Thought for the Day

November 9, 2009

No matter how much one wishes to try, exactly how can he turn his own will and his own life over to the care of whatever God he thinks there is? Fortunately, we who have tried it, and with equal misgivings, can testify that anyone, anyone at all, can begin to do it. We can futher add that a beginning, even the smallest, is all that is needed. Once we have placed the key of willingness in the lock and have the door ever so slightly open, we find that we can always open it some more. Though self-will may slam it shut again, as it frequently does, it will always respond the moment we again pick up the key of willingness.

Faith

The foundation stone of freedom from fear is that of faith:
a faith that, despite all worldly appearances to the contrary,
causes me to believe that I live in a universe that makes sense.
- As Bill Sees It, p. 51

Thought to Ponder . . .

Breathe in faith, breathe out fear.

Serenity Prayer

We treasure our "Serenity Prayer" because it brings a new light to us that can dissipate our oldtime and nearly fatal habit of fooling ourselves.

In the radiance of this prayer we see that defeat, rightly accepted, need be no disaster. We now know that we do not have to run away, nor ought we again try to overcome adversity by still another bulldozing power drive that can only push up obstacles before us faster than they can be taken down.

Alternatives

We were in a position where life was becoming impossible,
and if we had passed into the region
from which there is no return through human aid.
we had but two alternatives: One was to go on to the bitter end,
blotting out the consciousness of our intolerable situation as best we could,
and the other, to accept spiritual help.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 25

Thought to Ponder . . .

The solution is simple. The solution is spiritual.

One Sober Hour

Even if we drank yesterday, we can plan not to drink today. We may drink tomorrow -- who knows whether we'll even be alive then?-- but for this 24 hours, we decide not to drink. No matter what the temptation or provocation, we determine to go to any extremes necessary to avoid a drink today.

If the desire to drink is really stong, many of us chop the 24 hours down into smaller parts. We decide not to drink for, say, at least one hour. We can endure the temporary discomfort of not drinking for just one more hour; then one more, and so on. Many of us began our recovery in just this way. In fact, every recovery from alcoholism began with one sober hour.

The 'If' Trap

Alcoholism respects no ifs. It does not go away, not for a week, for a day,
or even for an hour, leaving us nonalcoholic and able to drink again
on some special occasion or for some extraordinary reason --
not even if it is a once-in-a-lifetime celebration, or if a big sorrow hits us,
or if it rains in Spain or the stars fall on Alabama.
Alcoholism is for us unconditional, with no dispensations available at any price.

Ask Him in you morning meditation what YOU can do each day for the man who is still sick.

Alcoholics anonymous, p. 164

For many years I pondered over God's will for me, believing that perhaps a great destiny had been ordained for my life. After all, having been born into a specific faith, hadn't I been told early that I was "chosen"? It finally occurred to me, as I considered the above passage, that God's will for me was simply that I practice Step Twelve on a daily basis. Furthermore, I realized I should do this to the best of my ability. I soon learned that the practice aids me in keeping my life in the context of the day at hand.

AA Thought for the Day

November 13, 2009

Indecision

In thinking about our day we may face indecision.
We may not be able to determine which course to take.
Here we ask God for inspiration, an intuitive thought or a decision.
We relax and take it easy. We don't struggle.
We are often surprised how the right answers come
after we have tried this for a while.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p.86

Thought to Ponder . . .

Today I pray over the things that I used to drink over.

Live and Let Live

To begin to put the concept of “Live and Let Live” into practice, we must face this fact; there are people in AA and everywhere else, who sometimes say things we disagree with, or do things we don’t like. Learning to live with the differences is essential to our comfort. It is exactly in those cases that we have found it extremely helpful to say to ourselves, “Oh, well, “Live and Let Live.”

In fact, in AA much emphasis is placed on learning how to tolerate other people’s behavior. However offensive or distasteful it may seem to us, it is certainly not worth drinking about. Our own recovery is too important, Alcoholism can and does kill, we recall.

Living Sober, p.11

I personally have needed to read this, just this week…

Followed up with the Serenity Prayer!

Honesty, Openmindedness, and Willingness, with these we are well on our way….

We Need Outside Help

It was evident that a solitary self-appraisal, and the admission of our defects based upon that alone, wouldn’t be nearly enough. We’d have to have outside help if we were surely to know and admit the truth about ourselves – the help of God and of another human being.

Only by discussing ourselves, holding back nothing, only by being willing to take advice and accept direction could we set foot on the road to straight thinking, solid honesty, and genuine humility.

++++++++++++++++++++

If we are fooling ourselves, a competent adviser can see this quickly. And, as he skillfully guides us away from our fantasies, we are surprised to find that we have few of the usual urges to defend ourselves against unpleasant truths. In no other way can fear, pride, and ignorance be so readily melted. After a time, we realize that we are standing firm on a brand-new foundation for integrity, and we gratefully credit our sponsors, whose advice pointed the way.

Growing Up

The man with the grown-up brain and the childish emotions
-- vanity, self-interest, false pride, jealousy, longing for social approval,
to name a few -- becomes a prime candidate for alcohol.
. . . that is a definition of alcoholism; a state of being in which the emotions
have failed to grow to the stature of the intellect.
- Experience, Strength and Hope, p. 423

Thought to Ponder . . .

Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional.

Alone No More

Alcoholism was a lonely business, even though we were surrounded by people who loved us. But when our self-will had driven everybody away and our isolation became complete, we commenced to play the big shot in cheap barrooms. Failing even in this, we had to fare forth alone on the street to depend upon the charity of passers-by.

We were trying to find emotional security either by dominating or by being dependent upon others. Even when our fortunes had not totally ebbed, we nevertheless found ourselves alone in the world. We still vainly tried to be secure by some unhealthy sort of domination or dependence.

For those of us who were like that, AA has a very special meaning. In this Fellowship we begin to learn right relations with people who understand us; we don’t have to be alone any more.

Keeping It Simple

Here are thousands of men and women, worldly indeed.
They flatly declare that since they have come to believe
in a Power greater than themselves,
to take a certain attitude toward that Power, and to do certain simple things,
there has been a revolutionary change in their way of living and thinking.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 50

Thought to Ponder . . .

While it isn't always easy, if I keep it simple, it works.

AA-related 'Alconym' . . .

Keep It Serenely Simple.

Dr. Bob said, "Let's not louse this thing up. Let's keep it simple!" I need to remember to be honest, stay sober, and never forget I'm just a drunk.

Joy of Living

The joy of living we really have,
even under pressure and difficulty. . .
There is scarcely any form of trouble and misery
which has not been overcome among us.
