AA Thought for the Day

January 31 2K10

So our troubles, we think, are basically of our own making. They
arise out of ourselves, and the alcoholic is an extreme example of
self-will run riot, though he usually doesn't think so.

Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 62

First of all, we had to quit playing God.

We had a new Employer. Being all powerful, He provided what
we needed, if we kept close to Him and preformed His work well.

Resentment is the “number one” offender. It destroys more
alcoholics than anything else.

When the spiritual malady is overcome, we straighten out
mentally and physically.

Once more: The alcoholic at certain times has no effective mental
defense against the first drink. Except in a few rare cases, neither
he nor any other human being can provide such a defense. His defense
must come from a Higher Power.

Meetings

Sometimes, the body can speak an eloquent language all its own.
I see and feel that in meetings. So coming to regular meetings of AA
is a priceless experience for me on a great many levels --
mental, spiritual, social, and now possibly physical.
Listening quietly is already a joy to me, and if it calms me down
and lowers my blood pressure in the process,
That’s just another great reason to keep coming back.

AA Thought for the Day

February 5, 2K10

Fellowship

I spent most of my life worrying about myself,
thinking that I was unwanted, that I was unloved.
I've learned since being in AA that the more I worry
about me loving you, and the less I worry about you
loving me, the happier I'll be. I discovered a fellowship
of human beings that I'd never seen before. I learned
how to be a friend. . . I have learned that the more
I give, the more I will have; the more I learn to give,
the more I learn to live.

Experience, Strength and Hope, p. 218

Love that is unseen is eternal.

AA Thought for the Day

February 7, 2K10

In spite of the great increase in the size and the span of this
Fellowship, at its core it remains simple and personal. Each day,
somewhere in the world, recovery begins when one alcoholic talks
with another alcoholic, sharing experience, strength, and hope.

Alcoholics Anonymous, p. xxii

We are people who normally would not mix. But there exists
among us a fellowship, a friendliness, and an understanding which
is indescribably wonderful.

A tremendous fact for every one of us is that we have
discovered a common solution. We have a way out on which
we can absolutely agree, and upon which we can join in brotherly
and harmonious action.

An illness of this sort – and we have come to believe it an illness
– involves those about us in a way no other human sickness can.

Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 17-18

AA Thought for the Day

Fundamental

One of the most fundamental things I have learned
is to pass on our message to other alcoholics.
That meant I must think more about others than about myself.
The most important thing is to practice these principles in all my affairs.
In my opinion, that is what Alcoholics Anonymous is all about.

Fantasy

The more I drank, the more I fantasized everything.
I imagined getting even for hurts and rejections. In my mind's eye
I played and replayed scenes in which I was plucked magically from the bar
where I stood nursing a drink and was instantly exalted
to some position of power and prestige. I lived in a dream world.
AA led me gently from this fantasizing to embrace reality with open arms.
And I found it beautiful! For, at last, I was at peace with myself.
And with others. And with God.

I had to get sober to be amazed.

AA Thought for the Day

February 8, 2K10

We began to see that the world and its people really dominated us.
In that state, the wrong-doing of others, fancied or real, had power
to actually kill. How could we escape? We saw that these resentments
must be mastered, but how? We could not wish them away any more than
alcohol.

Alcoholics Anonymous, p, 66

Outsiders are sometimes shocked when we burst into merriment over a
seemingly tragic experience out of the past. But why shouldn't we
laugh? We have recovered, and have been given the power to help others.

Step Two

It wasn't AA that had the closed mind, it was me.
The minute I stopped arguing, I could begin to see and feel.
Right there, Step Two gently and very gradually began to infiltrate my life.

Communicate

Chronologically, one of the first things AA members ever did,
which made my own recovery possible, was simply sticking together.
As has been said well and often, we may not all like each other,
but we do have to love each other.
Communicate or die! When put into action, the power of that idea alone
can keep a guy sober, to his own surprise, a very long time.
It did that for me, I know.

DIVINELY LED

Send me the right thought, word, or action., Show me what my

next step should be. In times of doubt and indecision, please send

Your inspiration and guidance.

-Alcoholics Anonymous

The good news or surrendering ourselves and our life to a Power greater than ourselves is that we come into harmony with a Grand Plan, one greater than we can imagine.

We are promised Divine Guidance if we ask for it, if we work the Twelve Steps. What greater gift could we receive than knowing our thoughts, words, and actions are being directed?

We aren't a mistake. And we don't have to control or repress ourselves or others for life to work out. Even the strange, the unplanned, the painful, and those things we call errors can evolve into harmony.

We will be guided into understanding what we need to do to take care of ourselves. We will begin to trust our instincts, our feelings, our thoughts. We will know when to go, to stop, to wait. We will learn a great truth: the plan will happen in spite of us, not because of us.

I pray today and each day that my thoughts, words, and actions may be Divinely led. I pray that I can move forward in confidence, knowing my steps are guided.

Day by Day is the only way....

Anger

If we were to live, we had to be free of anger.
The grouch and the sudden rage were not for us.

Realities

We have come to believe He would like us to keep our heads in the clouds
with Him, but that our feet ought to be firmly planted on earth.
That is where our fellow travelers are, and that is where our work must be done.
These are the realities for us.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 130

Thought to Ponder . . .

AA Thought for the Day

February 14, 2K10

We constantly remind ourselves we are no longer running the show,
humbly saying to ourselves many times each day "Thy will be done." We
are then in much less danger of excitement, fear, anger, worry, self-
pity, or foolish decisions. We become much more efficient. We do
not tire so easily, for we are not burning up energy foolishly as we
did when we were trying to arrange life to suit ourselves.

Sponsors

Every sponsor is necessarily a leader. The stakes are huge.
A human life, and usually the happiness of a whole family, hangs in the balance.
What the sponsor does and says, how well he estimates
the reactions of his prospects, how well he times and makes his presentation,
how well he handles criticisms, and how well he leads his prospect on
by personal spiritual example -- well, these attributes of leadership
can make all the difference between life and death.
- The Language of the Heart, p. 292

Thought to Ponder . . .

Don't look for a sponsor, listen for one.
