AA Thought for the Day

March 20, 2010

Expectations

Until I could honestly look at myself
and see that I was the problem in many situations
and react appropriately inside and out;
until I could discard my expectations and understand that my serenity
was directly proportional to them,
I could not experience serenity and sound sobriety.
- Daily Reflections, p. 71

Thought to Ponder . . .

If I am upset, I am the problem.

AA Thought for the Day

Tools

No one who drank as I did wakes up on the edge of the abyss one morning
and says: Things look pretty scary; I think I'd better stop drinking before I fall in.
I was convinced I could go as far as I wanted, and then climb back out
when it wasn't fun anymore. What happened was,
I found myself at the bottom of the canyon thinking I'd never see the sun again.
AA didn't pull me out of that hole.
It did give me the tools to construct a ladder with Twelve Steps.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 316

Thought to Ponder . . .

I stood in the sunlight at last.

Jay-Walking

Our behavior is as absurd and incomprehensible with
the respect to the first drink
as that of an individual with a passion, say, for jay-walking.
He gets a thrill out of skipping in front of fast-moving vehicles.
He enjoys himself for a few years in spite of friendly warnings . . .
he is slightly injured several times in succession. . .
a fast-moving trolley car breaks his arm.
He tells you he has decided to stop jay-walking for good,
but in a few weeks he breaks both legs.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, pp. 37-38

Thought to Ponder . . .

The first drink has the last say.

“The Only Requirement Is A Desire”

In Tradition Tree, AA is really saying to every serious drinker,
“You are an AA member if you say so. You can declare yourself
in; nobody can keep you out. No matter how low you’ve gone,
no matter how grave your emotional complications – even your
crimes – we don’t want to keep you out. We just want to be sure
that you get the same chance for sobriety that we’ve had.”

Support

When I talk with a newcomer to AA,
my past looks me straight in the face. . .
I extend my hand, and then the miracle happens:
I become healed.
My problems vanish as I reach out to this trembling soul.
- Daily Reflections, p. 274

Thought to Ponder . . .

Give a lot.
Expect little.
Keep it simple.

“Experimenters”

We agnostics liked AA alright, and were quick
to say that it had done miracles. But we recoiled
from meditation and prayer as obstinately as the
scientist who refused to perform a certain
experiment lest it prove his pet theory wrong.

When we finally did experiment, and unexpected
results followed, we felt different; in fact, we knew
different; and so we were sold on meditation and
prayer. And that, we have found, can happen to
anybody who tries. It has been well said that
“Almost the only scoffers at prayer are those who
never tried it enough.”

Choices

Looking back we see that our freedom to choose badly was not, after all,
a very real freedom.
When we chose because we "must," this was not a free choice either.
But it got us started in the right direction.
When we chose because we "ought to" we were really doing better. . .
But when, now and then, we could gladly make right choices
without rebellion, holdout, or conflict, then we had our first view
of what perfect freedom under God's will could be like.

AA Thought for the Day

March 24, 2K10

"If I don't go to meetings, I don't hear what God wants me to hear."

Before recovery, I kept a lot of lower companion company. I worked with a bunch of self-serving thieves who wanted the easy way out at the expense of others. My friends were alcoholics or drug addicts who were great to party with but not much help when I needed to move. Eventually I ended up lower then them all and was isolated, angry and out of options.

When I crawled into the rooms, it was suggested that I go to a lot of meetings and start paying attention to what I heard. When one of my old friends said that I was being brainwashed, I brought this up to my sponsor. He told me that from what he had heard from me so far, my brain could use some washing! As much as I didn't want to admit it, he was right, and over the years I've heard exactly what I've needed to hear from someone sharing in a meeting.

I've always been in awe of the wisdom that comes from the rooms. Even today, when I think I know it all, I'm amazed by what can come out of a newcomer's mouth. When I'm feeling scared, or discouraged, or disconnected, I almost always hear just what I need to change my perspective and find a solution. Today, when I'm feeling too busy or too comfortable to go, I remind myself that if I don't keep going to meetings, I won't keep hearing what God wants me to hear.

AA Thought for the Day

March 25, 2K10

A Full And Thankful Heart

I believe that we in AA are fortunate that we are constantly reminded of the need to be grateful and of how important gratitude is to our sobriety. I am truly grateful for the sobriety God has given me through the AA program and am glad I can give back what was given to me freely. I am grateful not only for sobriety, but for the quality of life my sobriety has brought. God has been gracious enough to give me sober days and a life blessed with peace and contentment, as well as the ability to give and receive love, and the opportunity to serve others – in our Fellowship, my family and my community. For all of this, I have “a full and thankful heart.”

I try hard to hold fast to the truth that a full and thankful heart cannot entertain great conceits. When brimming with gratitude, one’s heartbeat must surely result in outgoing love, the finest emotion that we can ever know.

As Bill Sees It, p. 37

Daily Reflections, p. 93

I am grateful for one set of footprints in the sand...

Irrationality

Few indeed are the practicing alcoholics who have any idea
how irrational they are, or seeing their irrationality, can bear to face it.
They are abetted in this blindness by a world which does not understand
the difference between drinking and alcoholism.

Impatience

We must learn to walk before we can run.
That's why we have these slogans.
I use that "Easy Does It" every day, to slow me down a little. . .
Before I step out and do anything, I stop and check it over first,
and then let my conscience be my guide.
For me, AA has become a way of life.

You are going to meet these new friends in your own community. Near
you, alcoholics are dying helplessly like people in a sinking ship.
If you live in a large place, there are hundreds. High and low, rich
and poor, these are future fellows of Alcoholics Anonymous. Among
them you will make lifelong friends. You will be bound to them with
new and wonderful ties, for you will escape disaster together and
you will commence shoulder to shoulder your common journey. Then you
will know what it means to give of yourself that others may survive
and rediscover life. You will learn the full meaning of 'Love thy
neighbor as thyself.’

AA Thought for the Day

March 28, 2010

Fourth Dimension

AA is not a place; it's an attitude of mind, a warmth of the heart
-- a spiritual fourth dimension where material things can't get the upper hand.
It's where accidents and hardships and common problems draw us together
just as surely as AA parties and conventions and birthdays.
Yes, we'll be all right, thank you.
- Thank You For Sharing, p. 12

Thought to Ponder . . .

There is no materialism in AA -- just spirituality.

AA Thought for the Day

All these, and many others, have one symptom in common: they cannot
start drinking without developing the phenomenon of craving. This
phenomenon, as we have suggested, may be the manifestation of an
allergy which differentiates these people, and sets them apart as a
distinct entity. It has never been, by any treatment with which we
are familiar, permanently eradicated. The only relief we have to
suggest is entire abstinence.

This immediately precipitates us into a seething caldron of debate.
Much has been written pro and con, but among physicians, the general
opinion seems to be that most chronic alcoholics are doomed.

Alcoholics Anonymous, p. xxx

When a drunk shows up among us and says that he doesn’t like the
AA principles, people, or service management, when he declares
that he can do better elsewhere – we are not worried. We simply
say, “Maybe your case really is different. Why don’t you try
something else?”

If and AA member says he doesn’t like his own group, we are not
disturbed. We simply say “Why don’t you try another one? Or start
one of your own.”

To those who wish to secede from AA altogether, we extend a
cheerful invitation to do just that. If they can do better by other
means, we are glad. If after a trial they cannot do better, we know
they face a choice: They can go mad or die or they can return to AA.
The decision is wholly theirs. (As a matter of fact, most of them
do come back.)

An Answer

If you still think you are strong enough to beat the game alone,
that is your affair.
But if you really and truly want to quit drinking liquor for good and all,
and sincerely feel that you must have some help, we have an answer for you.
It never fails, if you go about it with one half the zeal
you have been in the habit of showing when you were getting another drink.
Your Heavenly Father will never let you down!
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 181

Thought to Ponder . . .

Joy is in knowing there is an answer.
