AA Thought for the Day

April 20, 2010

.....we ask God to direct our thinking, especially
asking that it be divorced from self-pity, dishonest or
self-seeking motives.

Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 86

When said sincerely, this prayer teaches me to be
truly unselfish and humble, for even in doing good
deeds I often used to seek approval and glory for
myself. By examining my motives in all that I do, I
can be of service to God and others, helping them
do what they want to do. When I put God in
charge of my thinking, much needless worry is
eliminated and I believe He guides me throughout
the day. When I eliminate thoughts of self-pity,
dishonesty and self-centeredness as soon as they enter
my mind, I find peace with God, my neighbor and myself.

Daily Reflections, p. 119

It works - it really does.

“Faith without works is dead.”

Cultivating Faith

“I don’t think we can do anything very well in this
world unless we practice it. And I don’t believe we do
AA too well unless we practice it.... We should
practice.... acquiring the spirit of service. We
should attempt to acquire some faith, which isn’t
easily done, especially for the person who has always
been very materialistic, following the standards of
society today. But I think faith can be acquired; it
can be acquired slowly; it has to be cultivated. That
was not easy for me, and I assume that it is difficult
for everyone else....”

Dr. BOB AND THE GOOD OLDTIMERS, pp. 307-308

“God grant us the serenity to accept the things we
cannot change, the courage to change the things
we can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Isolation

Isolation sneaks up on us.
We can mask it with familiar props that are not in themselves bad.
We can isolate ourselves in an attempt to clean up our apartments
(and then not do the cleaning); we can isolate ourselves in churches or in sleep;
we can use family, sweethearts, compulsive working, television.
The list is long. The nicest way to end it is the way you and I do: together.
Reach out -- people can't read your mind.
Say ouch! Someone hears. Always.
- The Best of the Grapevine [Vol. 1], pp. 84-85

Thought to Ponder . . .

An alcoholic is someone who wants to be held while isolating.

AA Thought for the Day

April 22, 2010

On awakening let us think about the twenty-four hours ahead. We
consider our plans for the day. Before we begin, we ask God to
direct our thinking, especially asking that it be divorced from self-
pity, dishonest or self-seeking motives. Under these conditions we
can employ our mental faculties with assurance, for after all God
gave us brains to use. Our thought-life will be placed on a much
higher plane when our thinking is cleared of wrong motives.

Faith

The verdict of the ages is that faith means courage.
All men of faith have courage.
They trust their God.
We never apologize for God.
Instead we let Him demonstrate, through us, what He can do.
We ask Him to remove our fear and direct our attention
to what He would have us be.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 68

Thought to Ponder . . .

Faith is our greatest gift; its sharing with others our greatest responsibility.

Miracles

Here was something at work in the human heart which had done the impossible.
My ideas about miracles were drastically revised right then.
Never mind the musty past; here sat a miracle directly across the kitchen table.
He shouted great tidings.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 11

Thought to Ponder . . .

Don't give up before the miracle happens.

AA Thought for the Day

April 24, 2010

In our belief any scheme of combating alcoholism which proposes to
shield the sick man from temptation is doomed to failure. If the
alcoholic tries to shield himself he may succeed for a time, but
usually winds up with a bigger explosion than ever. We have tried
these methods. These attempts to do the impossible have always
failed.

Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 101

Some day we hope that Alcoholics Anonymous will help the public to
a better realization of the gravity of the alcoholic problem, but we
shall be of little use if our attitude is one of bitterness or
hostility. Drinkers will not stand for it.

After all, our problems were of our own making. Bottles were only a
symbol. Besides, we have stopped fighting anybody or anything. We
have to!

Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 103

Here are thousands of men and women, worldly
indeed. They flatly declare that since they have come
to believe in a Power greater than themselves, to take
a certain attitude toward that Power, and to do certain
simple things. There has been a revolutionary change
in their way of living and thinking. In the face of
collapse and despair, in the face of the total failure
of their human resources, they found that a new
power, peace, happiness, and sense of direction
flowed into them.

Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 50

Our liquor was but a symptom.

"Spiritual Side"

I think I have had a spiritual awakening,
as undramatic as it may have been, and that it will go on and on
as long as I continue to practice this program in my daily affairs.
To me, there is no "spiritual side" to the program of Alcoholics Anonymous;
the entire program is spiritual.
- Came To Believe . . . , p. 48

Thought to Ponder . . .

Talking about the spiritual part of the program
is like talking about the wet part of the ocean.

Action

My whole attitude toward life and other people is changing.
For me, the first "A" in our name stands for attitude.
My attitude is changed by the second "A" in our name, which stands for action.
By working the Steps, attending meetings, and carrying the message,
I can be restored to sanity. Action is the magic word!
- Daily Reflections, p. 161

Thought to Ponder . . .

Never mistake motion for action.

Keeping It Simple

Dr. Bob tells about keeping it simple and not to louse it up.
It's the last thing I ever heard him say, and I think there are some of us who,
at times, try to read extra messages and complexities into the Steps.
To me, AA is within the reach of every alcoholic, because it can be achieved
in any walk of life and because the achievement is not ours but God's.
I feel there is no situation too difficult, none too desperate, no unhappiness
too great to be overcome in this great Fellowship -- Alcoholics Anonymous.

~ Esther E., founded first AA Group in Dallas, Texas ~
- Experience, Strength and Hope, p. 342

Thought to Ponder . . .

While it isn't always easy, if I keep it simple, it works.

AA Thought for the Day

April 26, 2010

But there was always the curious mental phenomenon that parallel
with our sound reasoning there inevitably ran some insanely trivial
excuse for taking the first drink. Our sound reasoning failed to hold
us in check. The insane idea won out. Next day we would ask ourselves,
in all earnestness and sincerity, how it could have happened.

Forgiveness

I must forgive injuries, not just in words, or as a matter of form, but in my heart.
I do this not for the other persons' sake, but for my own sake.
Resentment, anger, or a desire to see someone punished,
are things that rot my soul.
- Daily Reflections, p. 88

Thought to Ponder . . .

Forgiveness of others is a gift to yourself.

As we go through the day we pause, when agitated or doubtful, and
ask for the right thought or action.

Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 87

In meditation, we ask God what we should do about each specific
matter. The right answer will come, if we want it.

Understanding

God began to clear my channels so that real understanding began to come. . .
It was realization and acknowledgement
of the fact that I was full of self-pity and resentment,
realization of the fact that I had not fully given my problems to God.
I was still trying to do my own fixing.

~ Florence R., early AA member 12-Stepped by Bill & Lois W. ~

Easy Does It

Many of us have tendencies at time to overdo things, to rush heedlessly along,
impatient with anything that slows us down.
We find it hard to relax and savor life.
When one of us is in a dither to get something done or get somewhere,
a friend may gently remonstrate, "'Easy Does It,' remember?"
There's often a flash of annoyance at the adviser.
And that indicates the advice must have hit home, wouldn't you say?
- Living Sober, p. 44

Thought to Ponder . . .

Rashness and haste make all things insecure -- take it easy!
