AA Thought for the Day

May 29, 2010

Time

And what is time to me now? It is a most precious asset.
I have the luxury of being able to cherish the memory of yesterday,
to live today with serenity, to wait for tomorrow.
I find contentment in just knowing where I was and where I am.
And I am grateful; grateful for the existence of AA; grateful to my God
for leading me to the doors of AA and to Himself, grateful for hope.
- The Best of the Grapevine [Vol. 2], p. 21

Thought to Ponder . . .

I am grateful for this minute. My eternity may be in it.

AA Thought for the Day

Resentments

Every response to every resentment, real or imagined,
had been sick and self-destructive.
I was allowing others to control my sense of well-being and behavior.
I came to understand that the behavior, opinions, and thoughts of others
were none of my business.
The only business I was to be concerned with was my own!
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 468

Thought to Ponder . . .

We are prisoners of our own resentments;
forgiveness unlocks the door and sets us free.

AA Thought for the Day

Prayer

I don't need to shut myself in a closet to pray.
It can be done even in a room full of people.
I just remove myself mentally for an instant.
As the practice of prayer continues, I will find I don't need words,
for God can, and does, hear my thoughts through silence.
- Daily Reflections, p. 322

Thought to Ponder . . .

Life is fragile, handle with prayer.

Always Say A Prayer.

AA Thought for the Day

June 1, 2K10

On awakening let us think about the twenty-four hours ahead. We
consider our plans for the day. Before we begin, we ask God to
direct our thinking, especially asking that it be divorced from self-
pity, dishonest or self-seeking motives. Under these conditions we
can employ our mental faculties with assurance, for after all God
gave us brains to use. Our thought-life will be placed on a much
higher plane when our thinking is cleared of wrong motives.

Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 86

The only requirement for AA membership is a desire
to stop drinking.

AA Thought for the Day

Willingness

The essence of all growth is a willingness to change for the better
and then an unremitting willingness to shoulder
whatever responsibility this entails.
- As Bill Sees It, p. 115

Thought to Ponder . . .

Life will take on new meaning.

AA-related 'Alconym' . . .

AA Thought for the Day

June 2, 2K10

A Changed Outlook

Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will
change.

Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 84

When I was drinking, my attitude was totally selfish,
totally self-centered; my pleasure and my comfort
came first. Now that I am sober, self-seeking has
started to slip away. My whole attitude toward life
and other people is changing. For me, the first “A”
in our name stands for attitude. My attitude is
changed by the second “A” in our name, which
stands for action. By working the Steps, attending
meetings, and carrying the message, I can be restored
to sanity. Action is the magic word! With a positive,
helpful attitude and regular AA action, I can stay
sober and help others to achieve sobriety. My attitude
now is that I am willing to go to any length to stay sober!

Daily Reflections, p. 161

THE AA PROMISES

If we are painstaking about this phase of our development,
we will be amazed before we are half way through. We are
going to know a new freedom and a new happiness. We will
not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it. We will
comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace.
No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see
how our experience can benefit others. That feeling of
uselessness and self-pity will disappear. We will lose interest
in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows. Self-seeking
will slip away. Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will
change. Fear of people and of economic insecurity will leave us.
We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to
baffle us. We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what
we could not do for ourselves.

Are these extravagant promises? We think not. They are being
fulfilled among us – sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. They
will always materialize if we work for them.

Alcoholics Anonymous, pp. 83-84

Awakening

I had been undergoing a spiritual experience without knowing it.
My confused questioning about a Higher Power, my changed mental attitude,
and even my physical recovery had all been part of a spiritual awakening.
Without knowing it, I had been in contact with the source of life,
whatever or whoever that might be.
- The Best of the Grapevine, [Vol. 2], p.193

Thought to Ponder . . .

A spiritual awakening is our greatest gift.

Dancing!

So Step Six may be the greatest act of courage
in the whole twelve-step process:
a total act of faith. I have to trust that God will see the big picture
and make the right choices. Funny thing is, without all that armor,
it's a lot easier to move.
In fact, I feel like dancing through the rest of the Steps.
- The AA Grapevine, June 2010, p.31

Thought to Ponder . . .

If I want God to remove my character defects, I'll have to stop doing them.

AA Thought for the Day

June 5, 2K10

Self-Respect Through Sacrifice

At the beginning we sacrificed alcohol. We had to,
or it would have killed us. But we couldn’t get rid
of alcohol unless we made other sacrifices. We
had to toss self-justification, self-pity, and anger
right out the window. We had to quit the crazy
contest for personal prestige and big bank
balances. We had to take personal responsibility
fFor our sorry state and quit blaming others for it.

Were these sacrifices? Yes, they were. To gain
enough humility and self-respect to stay alive at
all, we had to give up what had really been our
dearest possessions – our ambition and our
illegitimate pride.

AA Thought for the Day

June 7, 2K10

True Ambition – and False

We have had a much keener look at ourselves and
those about us. We have seen that we were
prodded by unreasonable fears or anxieties into
making a life business of winning fame, money,
and what we thought was leadership. So false pride
became the reverse side of that ruinous coin
marked “Fear.” We simply had to be Number One
people to cover up our deep-lying inferiorities.

<<<<<<<< >>>>>>>>

True ambition is not what we thought it was. True
ambition is the profound desire to live usefully
and walk humbly under the grace of God.

Twelve and Twelve
1. p. 125
2. p. 124-125

There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which
is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in
everlasting ignorance — that principle is contempt prior to
investigation.

Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 568

This is my personal favorite....

Willingness

My level of comfort is in direct relation to the degree of willingness
I possess at any given moment to give up my self-will,
and allow God's will to be manifested in my life.
With the key of willingness, my worries and fears
are powerfully transformed into serenity.
- Daily Reflections, p. 75

Thought to Ponder . . .

What have I been given today?
Am I willing to reach out and grasp it?

AA Thought for the Day

June 8, 2K10

"It's progress not perfection, we are not saints."

I had some friends over the other night for dinner and we started talking about road rage. We each had a story to tell about how we had participated in an escalating episode of honking, cutting off, or giving the finger to another angry driver. Being generally centered in other areas of my life, I was a little disappointed in myself when I realized that I, too, can become a complete asshole in about 15 seconds.

When I entered the program, I was used to acting this way. In general, I had a low regard for other people's feeling, and one of the problems I had with the steps is I thought if I didn't become a saint I wouldn't get sober. I remember telling my sponsor this and him saying four words that I still repeat to this day: "It's progress, not perfection."

I've made A LOT of progress over the years, and I've come a long way from where I've been. For the most part I'm comfortable in my own skin, I'm truly grateful for what I have, and I sincerely try to add to people's lives. And yet every now and then, sometimes without me even being aware of it, something will provoke me into a state of fear and I'll resort - temporarily - to an old behavior. Thankfully I'm able to recover my serenity pretty quickly, and when I do I remind myself:

"It's progress not perfection, we are not saints."

Young in AA

In order to recover in AA, young people are asked to practice self-honesty
when they have no idea who they are and to be responsible
when they don't yet know how. . .
But it's also important for them to remember that they're still adolescents
and need to allow themselves to be. . . .
It's important for the young person to know that it's still possible to have fun
and do the things young people do and stay sober.

AA Thought for the Day

June 9, 2K10

This painful past may be of infinite value to other families still
struggling with their problem. We think each family which has been
relieved owes something to those who have not, and when the occasion
requires, each member of it should be only too willing to bring
former mistakes, no matter how grievous, out of their hiding places.
Showing others who suffer how we were given help is the very thing
which makes life seem so worthwhile to us now."

Alcoholics Anonymous, 4th Edition, The Family Afterward, pg. 124

Self-searching is the means by which we bring new
vision, action, and grace to bear upon the dark and
negative side of our natures. With it comes the
development of that kind of humility that makes it
possible for us to receive God’s help…….we find that
bit by bit we can discard the old life – the one that did
not work – for a new life that can and does work
under any conditions whatever.

We will want the good that is in us all, even in
the worst of us, to flower and to grow. But first
of all we shall want sunlight; nothing much can
grow in the dark. Meditation is our step out into
the sun.

<<<<<<>>>>>>

“A clear light seems to fall upon us all – when
we open our eyes. Since our blindness is caused
by our own defects, we must first deeply realize
what they are. Constructive meditation is the first
requirement for each new step in our spiritual
growth”
