AA Thought for the Day

June 20, 2K10

RELEASE FROM FEAR

The problem of resolving fear has two aspects. We
shall have to try for all the freedom from fear that is
possible for us to attain. Then we shall need to find
both the courage and grace to deal constructively
with whatever fears remain.

As Bill Sees It, p. 61

Most of my decisions were based on fear. Alcohol
made life easier to face, but the time came when
alcohol was no longer an alternative to fear. One of
the greatest gifts in AA for me has been the courage
to take action, which I can do with God’s help. After
five years of sobriety I had to deal with a heavy dose
of fear. God put the people in my life to help me do that
and, through my working the Twelve Steps, I am
becoming the whole person I wish to be and, for that,
I am deeply grateful.

Listening

If you really listen to (not just hear) what is being said,
you may find the person talking has quietly slipped inside your head
and seems to be describing the landscape there
-- the shifting shapes of nameless fears,
the color and chill of impending doom --
if not the actual events and words stored in your brain.
- Living Sober, p. 85

Thought to Ponder . . .

Learn to listen; listen to learn.

AA Thought for the Day

June 21, 2K10

Willingness Is the Key

No matter how much one wishes to try, exactly
how can he turn his own will and his own life
over to the care of whatever God he thinks
there is?

A beginning, even the smallest, is all that is
needed. Once we have placed the key of
willingness in the lock and have the door ever so
slightly open, we find that we can always open it
some more.

Though self-will may slam it shut again, as it
frequently does, it will always respond the
moment we again pick up the key of willingness.

Twelve and Twelve, p. 35

As Bill Sees It, p. 35

I can't, he can, I think I'll let him.

Today is a gift; that's why it's called the present.

Challenges

Life is meant to be lived by facing the challenges it brings.
Otherwise, I'm not living, just existing.
God didn't give me this gift of sobriety to sit in a rocking chair,
imagining myself as some wise old woman who has arrived somewhere.
There is no easier, softer way.
- The Best of the Grapevine [Vol. 3], p. 320

Thought to Ponder . . .

What I am is God's gift to me. What I make of myself is my gift to Him.

AA Thought for the Day

TODAY, I’M FREE

This brought me to the good healthy realization that
there were plenty of situations left in the world over
which I had no personal power – that if I was so ready
to admit that to be the case with alcohol, so I must
make the same admission with respect to much else.
I would have to be still and know that He, not I, was God!

As Bill Sees It, p. 114

I am learning to practice acceptance in all circumstances
of my life, so that I may enjoy peace of mind. At one time
life was a constant battle because I felt I had to go through
each day fighting myself, and everyone else. Eventually,
this became a losing battle. I ended up getting drunk and
crying over my misery. When I began to let go and let God
take over my life began to have peace of mind. Today, I am
free. I do not have to fight anybody or anything anymore.

Daily Reflections, p. 182

A.A. = Altered Attitudes

Directions to AA: Just go straight to hell and make a U-turn.

Sobriety is a journey, not a destination.

I came; I came to; I came to believe (Steps 1,2,3).

Reprieve

It is easy to let up on the spiritual program of action and rest on our laurels.
We are headed for trouble if we do, for alcohol is a subtle foe.
We are not cured of alcoholism.
What we really have is a daily reprieve
contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 85

Thought to Ponder . . .

The alcoholic is in no greater peril than when he takes sobriety for granted.

AA Thought for the Day

June 23, 2K10

Prelude to the Program

Few people will sincerely try to practice the AA program
unless they have “hit bottom,” for practicing AA’s Steps
means the adoption of attitudes and actions that almost
no alcoholic who is still drinking can dream of taking.
The average alcoholic, self-centered in the extreme,
doesn’t care for this prospect – unless he has to do these
things in order to stay alive himself.

We know that the newcomer has to “hit bottom”; otherwise,
not much can happen. Because we are drunks who understand
him, we can use at depth the nutcracker of the–obsession-plus-
the-allergy as a tool of such power that it can shatter his ego.
Only thus can he be convinced that on his own unaided
resources he has little or no chance.

Unity

We know that AA must continue to live,
or else many of our fellow alcoholics throughout the world
will surely resume the hopeless journey into oblivion. That must never be.
. . . we have thus far avoided serious controversies.
Save minor and healthy growing pains, we are at peace among ourselves.
And because we have thus far adhered to our sole aim,
the whole world regards us favorably.
May God grant us the wisdom and fortitude ever to sustain
an unbreakable unity.

There is no strength without unity.

AA Thought for The day

June 24, 2K10

"My definition of balance is being able to obsess equally in all areas of my life!"

As an alcoholic I completely understand all or nothing thinking. When I was in my disease, I used to obsessively plan out my drinking and using, always making sure I had the right amount of drugs on me, and I would even drink before meeting friends at the bar just so I could pretend to drink like them. In the end, my obsession consumed me and drove me into the rooms.

Once I started working the steps, I began obsessing on other things. For a while I was consumed with dying, sure I had done irreparable damage to myself during my years of using. Next I became obsessed with the fear of financial insecurity, this time convinced I had ruined my professional future. And then I got into a relationship and that obsession nearly drove me to drink. During my sixth step I realized that I had to surrender my obsessive thinking if I wanted to stay sober.

For me surrendering my obsessive thinking came down to a question of faith - did I or didn't I trust that my Higher Power would take care of me? As I began to obsess on that, my sponsor told me that faith wasn't a thought but rather an action. He suggested I begin letting go and letting God, and each time I did my life got a little better.

Today I know that obsessing isn't the answer, turning it over is.

AA Thought for Today

June 25, 2K10

Assuming we are spiritually fit, we can do all sorts of things
alcoholics are not supposed to do. People have said we must not go
where liquor is served; we must not have it in our homes; we must
shun friends who drink; we must avoid moving pictures which show
drinking scenes; we must not go into bars; our friends must hide
their bottles if we go to their houses; we mustn't think or be
reminded about alcohol at all. Our experience shows that this is not
necessarily so.

We meet these conditions every day. An alcoholic who cannot meet
them, still has an alcoholic mind; there is something the matter with
his spiritual status.

Humility

How painful it is to keep demanding the impossible,
and how very painful to discover, finally, that all along
we have had the cart before the horse!
Then comes the final agony of seeing how awfully wrong we have been.
- The Language of the Heart, p. 236

Thought to Ponder . . .

My sponsor gave me a "Humility" badge,
then took it away when I started wearing it.

Perfection

Perfection would limit me;
imperfection offers me the freedom of a million potentials.
All the excitement and interest and wonder of adventure are mine to explore,
ever-new, ever-changing, ever-becoming.

Thought to Ponder . . .

AA Thought for Today

June 27, 2K10

A Two-Way Street

If we ask, God will certainly forgive our derelictions.
But in no case does He render us white as snow and
Keep us that way without our cooperation.

Twelve and Twelve, p. 65

No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we
will see how our experience can benefit others. That
feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear.
We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest
in our fellows. Self-seeking will slip away. Our whole
attitude and outlook upon life will change. Fear of
people and of economic insecurity will leave us. We
will intuitively know how to handle situations which
used to baffle us. We will suddenly realize that God
is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.
Are these extravagant promises? We think not.

They are being fulfilled among us—sometimes quickly,
sometimes slowly. They will always materialize if we
work for them.

Fictitious Thinking

There are a lot of people who don't like the weakness that is implied
in the word "surrender."
People like to think they are strong characters
who can take care of their own destinies.
That is always fictitious thinking.
Everybody in this world is some kind of weakling, and if he thinks he is not,
then pride is his weakness, and that is the greatest weakness of all.
~ Alcoholics Anonymous Comes of Age, p. 266

Thought to Ponder . . .

AA Thought for Today

June 28, 2K10

We alcoholics are men and women who have lost the ability to control
our drinking. We know that no real alcoholic ever recovers control.
All of us felt at times that we were regaining control, but such
intervals—usually brief—were inevitably followed by still less
control, which led in time to pitiful and incomprehensible
demoralization. We are convinced to a man that alcoholics of our
type are in the grip of a progressive illness. Over any considerable
period we get worse, never better.
